Research Methods and Reporting

The Methods section must describe the research design, setting, participants or data sources, sampling procedures, instruments, data collection, and analysis in sufficient detail to allow readers to assess the study. Authors should explain how sample size was determined and report the validity and reliability of measurement instruments where relevant.

Results must be reported accurately and consistently across the text, tables, and figures. Conclusions must be supported by the findings and account for the study's limitations. Observational studies should avoid causal claims that are not supported by their design.

Research Ethics and Informed Consent

Research involving human participants must report approval from the appropriate research ethics committee, including the committee name and approval reference number where available. Where a formal exemption applies, authors must explain its basis and identify the authority that granted it.

Authors must describe the informed consent procedures applicable to their study and the measures taken to protect participants' privacy and confidentiality. Identifiable patient information or images require appropriate consent for publication. Ethical approval and consent information must be reported accurately and must not be fabricated.

Required Declarations

  • Funding: Identify the funding source and grant number, where applicable. If the study received no specific funding, state this explicitly.
  • Conflict of Interest: Disclose relevant financial or non-financial competing interests. If none exist, state this explicitly.
  • Author Contributions: Describe each author's contribution to the research and manuscript.
  • Data Availability: Explain whether and how the supporting data can be accessed. Where access is restricted by privacy, consent, or ethical requirements, explain the restrictions.
  • Generative AI Use: Where generative AI tools were used in conducting the research or preparing the manuscript, identify the tools and describe their purposes. Authors remain responsible for all content, references, and interpretations. AI tools must not be listed as authors.
